 Talladega Superspeedway

Talladega Superspeedway opened its gates in September 1969. It was then known as Alabama Internatinal Motor Speedway and came about after local Bill Ward found the site after talking with Bill France at Daytona in the mid 60s. France became the guiding light and construction of the 2000 acre site began on 23rd May 1968.

The track itself is is 2.66 miles long, four lanes wide and is banked 33 degrees on each end, with 18 degree banking in the tri-oval. This configuration has produced some of the fastest and most competitive racing in history. The backstretch is nearly 4000ft long and Nascars reach speeds in excess of 220 mph. The grandstands seating capacity is 143,000 with many more watching from the infield.

Over the years many drivers have triumphed at Talladega but none like Dale Earnhardt who posted 10 Nascar Sprint Cup victories over the years. Earnhardts first victory was in the 1983 Talladega 500, and he also won in IROC winning a total of 14 times at the superspeedway. Jeff Gordon is another to dominate at Talladega with six victories and Dale Earnhardt Jr. has five victories.
