Pikes Peak Hillclimb

Pikes Peak Hillclimb is the second oldest motorsport event in the United States and dates back to 1916. It consists of a 156 turn, 12.4 mile climb up the spectacular Pikes Peak. The course starts at a height of 9,390ft and climbs to the summit which is 14,110ft. The course consists of a mixture of smooth packed gravel and seal, with aproximately 6 miles of each. As the competitors climb towards the summit, their cars will loose 30% of their horsepower due to the thin air, and drivers have to be able to cope with these atmospheric conditions as well.

Each year entrants from all over the world take on the mighty mountain in the "Race to the clouds". This year's race was a huge success held in perfect weather with Nobuhiro (Monster) Tajima again setting the fastest time of 10 min 11.490 sec. His time was once again short of his current record of 10 min 01 sec, set in 2007 in his highly modified Suzuki, which means the magic 10 minute barrier is still intact. Rhys Millen finished 3rd in the Unlimited division in his Hyundai with a time of 11 min 06.208 sec.

NZ's Andrew Hawkeswood  competed in the Open division in his Mitsubishi Evo 8, but failed to finish.   Iconic Motorsport Adventures will be putting a package together utilising RV motorhomes for the 2011 Pikes Peak Hillclimb. Situated in the beautiful Colorado Springs region, this tour provides a perfect springboard to go further afield and visit the Rockies, or head cross country towards Las Vegas via the Grand Canyon.
